At Walker Orthodontics near Groton, we work to customize the teeth straightening care that best fits your cosmetic needs. As orthodontic care advances, patients have been requesting the use of Invisalign, or clear braces rather than the traditional metal ones. The question we are now faced with is simply the matter of which one is more effective. The answer may be as subjective as to the needs and tastes of every individual patient, but many patients are now opting to ask the question, “why choose Invisalign over braces?” While it does depend on every individual patient, Dr. John Walker and Dr. Liz Walker have found that more patients are choosing Invisalign near Groton over traditional metal braces. And Walker Orthodontics has come up with a few reasons as to why this may be happening.
Traditional Braces are irremovable. They consist of brackets and wires that are inserted into the mouth and worn 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Since they cannot be taken out there must be proper precautions made over the types of foods eaten or any contact sports played that might cause damage. Invisalign aligners are removable and essentially invisible to the human eye. They should be worn at least 22 hours a day, but can be taken out during eating or play. Being removable allows them to be more convenient for children and adults who are constantly on the go.
Traditional braces are made of metal brackets and wires. They provide stability and effective teeth straightening, however the sides or “wings” of the brackets can possibly cause sores and pain during teeth movement and overall orthodontic treatments. Invisalign is made of a strong medical grade, thermoplastic material that are fitted snugly around the teeth to the position desired by the patient. They cause a lot less discomfort and are just as effective as traditional metal braces.
Keeping up with oral hygiene is much easier with Invisalign. Traditional braces make brushing and flossing more difficult due to the wires and brackets. Invisalign also reduces the risk of the staining underneath the metal braces. When brackets are removed, people often notice a change in color from the part of their teeth that were covered by the braces, and the non-covered parts. With Invisalign, that won’t happen.
In the end, it all depends on the individual patient. Invisaligns are removable, lighter, and overall more convenient in day to day activities, but a consultation with Dr. John Walker and Dr. Liz Walker and the team will let you know which orthodontic treatment is right for you.
